Upcycling and personalising your home

Inject your personality into your home this autumn. Upcycle furniture to create unique pieces and add personal touches that express your individual style. There are lots of easy and enjoyable ways to give your space a customised feel, even on a tight budget.

Upcycle your furniture

Upcycling furniture is a fun way to get one-of-a-kind furnishings, while saving money. With many paints you don’t even need to prepare surfaces or use primers. Choose the right paint for the finish and level of sheen you want. Spray paints are a quick option for most pieces.

Decoupage

Decoupage – sticking images to a surface, then varnishing over for durability – can be as simple or complex as you like. Use wallpaper or even patterned fablon to really make a piece your own.

Create a kitchen island

If you’re looking for creative ways to update your kitchen décor this autumn, an old chest of drawers can make a fabulous kitchen island. Choose a solid piece of furniture with fully operating drawers. Add castors to the legs so you can move it around and paint it in an accent colour. Use a length of timber worktop or an offcut of granite or marble that you can cut to size and polish the edges. Add hooks for utensils, or a shallow shelf for cookery books or spices.
