Before you start
The best place to begin is your garden or local hedgerows, searching out the greenest branches, leaves, berries and pinecones to give your wreath a classic festive feel. Once you’ve gathered your foliage, it’s time to sort it into separate piles. That way it’s easy to layer them evenly when around the wreath.

With your foliage sorted, lay all your materials out in a circle around your wreath base to check you’ve got enough of everything. After all, there’s nothing worse than realising half-way through that you haven’t got enough leaves or pinecones.

Wrap the end of your florist’s wire round the frame four or five times, pulling it tight to make sure it’s safely attached. Once secure, lay your first piece of foliage on your base, with the leafiest part sticking outwards. Then wrap your next length of florist wire around the stem, about 3/4 of the way down the branch. Follow with more foliage next to your first piece, alternating the type for a mixed feel.
Top tip: Make sure each new piece of foliage is overlapping the last to keep your wire hidden from view.

Continue piece by piece until you’ve covered between the bottom half and two thirds of your wreath with greenery – leaving the top free for a few sprigs of ivy. Then you can start to tie your accessories on, intermingling berries and pinecones with the foliage for a proper winter feel. Be sure to tie them tightly with florist twine too so they don’t fall off when you hang it.
Top tip: For pinecones, make a hook with your wire and loop it around the open folds of the cone, twisting it closed at the other end.

When you’re happy with how your wreath looks, all that’s left is to tie a ribbon on it – literally. Cut around a 50-60cm length of ribbon, and loop one end of it round the top of your wreath. From there, tie the other end round whatever you’re planning to hang your wreath from – and check that it holds.
