What kinds of beds are available?
Traditional bedframes are the perfect choice for anyone who wants to add an individual decorative touch to their bedroom and create a design feature out of their bed. Available in a range of sizes, styles and materials, the right bedframe can help you stamp your personality on a bedroom and complete the look you’re going for.
Divan beds have bases instead of frames, so they take up less floor space – making them ideal for smaller bedrooms and guest rooms. Most divans also come with built in storage, making them even more useful in ‘bijou’ homes. They are also a great solution if you’re struggling to find enough space for your linen, blankets and clothes.
Perfect if you have a lot of friends or family to stay, guest beds – like those with slide out mattresses, or those that fold away, are a practical solution that won’t take up too much floor space. Easily stored in a wardrobe or under a bed, they can be quickly set up whenever you need them.
Designed like a traditional bedstead, but with the addition of built in drawers or handy compartments, storage beds are a great solution for anyone who wants a stylish bed but doesn’t want to compromise on space. The perfect choice for smaller properties and busy homes – Homebase stock storage beds in a full range of sizes, styles and materials.
What should I look for in a new bed?
What size bed do I need?
Standard UK sizes range from single to super king size, with a variety of bed styles available in each category.
The size of bed that’s right for you will depend on the dimensions of your bedroom, your height and how much sleeping space you need to be comfortable (extra important if you’re sharing). If you’re keeping an old mattress and simply buying a divan or frame to go with it, the size of the mattress will determine the size of the frame you need to go for.
Choosing a divan
A great choice for kids’ rooms, guest rooms and smaller master bedrooms, divans either have solid or sprung bases and normally come with built in storage. Choose between:
- Solid base: A mattress that’s placed on a divan with a solid base will feel firmer and more supportive when you lie on it.
- Sprung base: Divans with sprung bases allow the mattress to adapt to your body’s contours, making it feel softer and increasing the lifespan of the mattress.
- Storage options: Divan beds come with a range of storage options designed to cater to a variety of needs. From no storage at all to one-sided drawers to double-sided drawers and ottoman compartments, it’s easy to find the design that suits you.
Choosing a bedstead
As the centrepiece of your bedroom’s design, your bedstead will make a big decorative statement, so it’s important to ensure it goes well with the style you’re trying to achieve.
Here at Homebase, we’ve got a wide range of bedsteads in everything from metal and wood to leather and fabric, so you’re certain to find something that will help you to create the bedroom you’ve always wanted.
For those who like a firmer mattress, solid slats will provide the support you need, while bowed or sprung slats will offer a little more flexibility.
Electric adjustable beds
If you have trouble getting comfortable, find it hard to get in or out of bed or just want to add a touch of luxury to your bedroom, an electric adjustable bed could be just what you’re looking for.
Supplied with an easy to use hand held control panel, you can quickly and easily change the position and contours of electrical beds to cater to your needs. So whether you want to sit up in bed to watch TV, read a book or just want to put your feet up and relax, the bed will change shape to match your requirements.
Adjustable beds are available in single, double, divan and bedstead designs – make sure you look out for models with splash proof motors and end clips to ensure the mattress stays in position when the bed is raised.
Choosing a headboard
Though the majority of bedsteads come with built in headboards, many divans don’t, giving you the chance to customise your new bed to match your décor and create the style you’re after.
Designed to slot quickly and easily into place, headboards are available in a range of materials including wood, metal, leather and fabric. Choose from a variety of styles, colours and sizes to create an eye-catching feature and give your bedroom the style and sophistication it deserves.
Homebase buyer’s tip
If you’re buying a bed complete with a mattress, make sure you try it out first. You spend around a third of your life in bed, so it’s worth taking the time to get your decision just right – test out as many as possible to make sure you get a perfect night’s sleep.
Another important thing to consider is that, although it feels like a big investment now, the average lifespan of a bed is 10 years, that means that every £100 you spend boils down to just 2.7p a night.
