Before planting, enrich the soil with well-rotted manure or garden compost. Provide sturdy support, such as strong trellis or wires attached to walls and pergolas, for the twining stems. Standard wisterias require especially robust support to protect the head from strong winds.
Water and feed regularly until fully established. In autumn or spring, mulch the base of the plant with well-rotted manure or compost. Prune in July and again in February. During the first two years, prune to create a framework of permanent stems, tying in selected lateral shoots to sturdy supports and cutting back unwanted growth. Once the framework is established, continue pruning twice a year to contain the plant's growth.
