Rhododendrons prefer moist, well-drained, acid soil enriched with well-rotted organic matter. Plant in semi-shade or dappled shade, sheltered from cold, drying winds. Many dwarf rhododendrons tolerate a sunny position if the soil remains reliably moist. In alkaline soil, grow in patio containers with ericaceous compost and a soil based compost. Rhododendrons are surface rooting, so avoid deep planting.
