English Lavender is an excellent choice for attracting wildlife to your garden, showcasing fragrant foliage and upright purple flower spikes with a mound-forming, spreading habit. These are ideal for creating a patio feature or planting at the front of a border as an attractive pathway edging.
English Lavender is hardier than French varieties, making it a robust and reliable choice for the garden. For best results, pot up plants using free-draining compost and grow them in frost-free conditions until they are large enough to plant outside. Once well-grown, acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before planting them in free-draining soil in full sun. Lavenders dislike wet ground, especially during winter, so improve heavy soil by adding coarse grit or sharp sand before planting.
When growing English Lavender in large patio containers, use a well-drained, soil-based compost. After planting, prune to encourage bushy growth and water regularly throughout the summer until fully established. Once established, they are reasonably drought-tolerant. Immediately after flowering, prune back to within 2cm (1 inch) of the previous year's growth to maintain a compact, well-shaped plant.
Culinary tip: Use the freshly picked flowers to make delicious lavender sugar or lavender and mint jelly.
