Clematis montana 'Mayleen', the 'mile-a-minute' clematis, is a handsome, rapid climber sure to transform any garden. Celebrated for its quick growth, this variety showcases delightful satin-pink, ruffled blooms, accompanied by the best scent among Clematis montana. The sparkling bronze foliage further enhances its visual appeal.
Reaching a height of up to 10m and spreading 3m wide, it's ideal for training onto trellis, wires, or freestanding climbing frames, adding vertical interest and fragrance.
To ensure successful growth, pot up the plants initially and nurture them until they are robust enough for their final positions. Choose a spot that offers either sun or semi-shade, with moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Position the top of the rootball 7.5cm below soil level to encourage new shoots from the plant's base. Clematis thrive when trained onto supports like trellis or wires.
Throughout the growing season, feed and water frequently. Prune in summer after flowering, removing any damaged or dead stems and cutting back the remaining stems to a pair of healthy buds to maintain shape and size. Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost in spring to protect the roots and retain soil moisture.
