Behold the iconic Japanese Maple, Acer palmatum. A slow-growing, small deciduous tree, celebrated for its vibrant red and green lobed foliage in autumn. Its compact nature and leisurely growth rate make it easy to maintain, ideal for both petite gardens and container growing.
These varieties form a rounded canopy of colour, with foliage that transforms throughout the seasons, from spring to summer, culminating in a spectacular autumn display before shedding its leaves in winter, only to return in spring with renewed vigour.
The two varieties available are perfect as stand-alone specimen plants. Alternatively, they can be incorporated into a Japanese-themed border or planted beneath larger trees in areas of dappled shade where sunlight may not always be able to reach.
Acer palmatum Atropurpureum: A classic Japanese Maple, showcasing stunning purple-red foliage that evolves into a brilliant, fiery red in autumn.
Acer palmatum Osakazuki: A striking variety, highly esteemed for its intense autumn colours.
Thrive in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil, positioned in sun or dappled shade, shielded from strong winds which can scorch the finely cut leaves. Plant in large containers or pots using soil-based compost. Water regularly during the growing season until established. Protect from strong winds. Acers require minimal pruning, primarily to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if needed from late autumn to midwinter.
