Product Information

One plant supplied
Kiwis (Actinidia) may seem exotic, but there are several types that will fruit in the UK if grown in a warm, sunny, sheltered spot. These Kiwi fruits are vigorous climbers and need plenty of space, they are at their best trained and pruned twice a year to get the best crop and to also keep them under control. Take care to buy a hardy variety, that is ideally self-fertile (does not require another pollinating partner). Kiwis make attractive plants, with large, often velvety leaves, with furry shoots and creamy-white fragrant flowers and (on female or self-fertile plants) downy or smooth oval fruits that develop over the summer and into autumn. The fruits rarely ripen fully outdoors except in long hot summers but can simply be picked and ripened indoors. However here a female and male plants are grown together on a hoop.
  • Low maintenance
  • Easy to grow
  • Pruning is essential for this plant to be manageable

Additional Information

Kiwis are vigorous growers hence they need sturdy support and a warm sunny sheltered site. They require pruning annually if not bi-annually. It is best to prune Kiwi's straight after planting, and feed in season with high potassium fertilisers to encourage flowers and fruit. Although Kiwi's are hardy while dormant in winter, the young shoots in spring are susceptible to frost damage, which can slow its growth, hence protect plants late spring with hessian or breathable fleece if they are sprouting already. Unmature plants will start fruiting 3-4 years after planting. Long warm summer and autumn is required to ripen fruit outdoor, if fruit doesn't ripen before frost, pick it and ripen it indoors.
