How to choose the best mattress

The perfect mattress should mould to the shape of your body but still be supportive. Here's a quick and easy way to test if a mattress has got what it takes...
Lie on your back, then slide the flat of your hand into the hollow of your back. If there's a gap, the bed is too firm. If it's difficult to slide your hand in at all, it's probably too soft. Spend at least five minutes testing a mattress by lying in your usual sleeping position. If you share a bed with your partner, check out the bed together.

Whatever type of mattress you have, a topper will improve your comfort and add a luxurious feel.

Matching your mattress to a base

Boost your comfort by choosing a mattress and base specially designed to work together. Homebase complete divan and mattress packages offer you a choice of mattress style, firmness and finish. Buying your mattress and divan together also saves you money. For more on finding the best bed for you, see our buying guide.

Caring for your mattress

Protect your mattress with a mattress topper - they're also easy to remove and clean.

Air your mattress every week by turning back the bed linen for a few hours.

Turn your mattress regularly to maintain shape and firmness (not necessary if you have a no-turn mattress).

Homebase buyer's tip

Don't keep sitting on the edge of your mattress as this will eventually weaken it.
