the perfect surface for every room.

Types of flooring and where to use them
Our guide will help you choose the right flooring option for each room, depending what each space needs.
Choosing the right floor for your room
Before you buy, have a think about these key points:
- How much 'foot traffic' does the room get each day? A room that gets a lot of visitors needs durable flooring.
- Will the room be used by children and pets? You'll need hard-wearing flooring to cope with potential knocks and scratches!
- Does your floor covering need to be waterproof or soundproof?
- How much sunshine does the room receive? Bright sunlight can fade carpets.
- What size is the room? Light-coloured flooring can open up small spaces, while dark flooring can make larger rooms more cosy.
- Think about the flooring in adjacent rooms - how will your new floor blend with the overall look?
Solid real wood
This is an excellent investment for your home! Solid real wood flooring creates a long-lasting, distinctive floor - a truly stunning transformation. You'll enjoy the unique texture and feel of genuine wood underfoot. Add extra character by varying plank lengths. The wood can simply be refinished for longer life. And real wood flooring is so easy to lay - simply glue and tap together.
Engineered real wood
Beautiful and long-lasting, smooth and warm to walk on, engineered real wood flooring has a wood core with solid veneer. Colours range from pale oak to caramel and coffee shades. For easy installation, choose glueless construction.
Perfect for...
Quiet underfoot and stunning to look at, this is a great choice for dining and living rooms.
Laminate
There's never been more choice when it comes to laminate flooring. The latest looks incorporate textured finishes or bevelled edges that are virtually identical to solid wood. For convenience, choose glueless laminate.
Handscraped laminate
You get the finish and appeal of real wood but also the resilience of a laminate floor. Design features include a woodgrain textured surface and four-sided bevelled edge. Stain-resistant, laminate flooring won't fade in strong sunlight.
Textured laminate
Offers textured wood styling for a realistic flooring effect. Features a hard and durable top-layer finish, which is also scratch-resistant.
Perfect for...
Laminate is specifically designed for high-traffic areas, making it ideal for any room in your home. While laminate flooring is moisture-resistant, you'll need a special water-resistant laminate if you're using it in your kitchen or bathroom.
Vinyl
Available in tiles or sheets, vinyl flooring comes in a huge variety of patterns and colours. It can be designed to resemble other materials, such as wood, marble, stone and metal, all for a fraction of the cost.
For extra comfort, choose cushioned vinyl - it's lovely and soft to walk on. Vinyl tiles have self-adhesive backings that are easy to lay. Just peel back and stick.
Perfect for...
Vinyl flooring is waterproof, hard-wearing and easy to maintain, so it's just right for kitchens and bathrooms.
Carpet and carpet tiles
Like carpets, carpet tiles are soft underfoot and create a really cosy feeling. But unlike carpets, they're easy to repair and replace. Just remove the damaged tile and replace with a new one. Simple!
Carpets help to insulate rooms, give you extra warmth and muffle sound. Choose the surface texture, or 'pile', depending on the amount of use a room gets. Busy rooms need a hard-wearing surface texture. Rooms with less foot traffic can easily handle a plush style.
Perfect for...
Adding a luxurious look and feel to living rooms, or for high-maintenance areas that need cosying up, such as children's rooms and nurseries.

Caring for your flooring
Wood and laminate
Vacuum regularly, then use a well wrung-out damp mop to keep it clean. Deal with spills immediately and don't let the flooring get too wet. Some real wood flooring and wood laminates can be sanded and resealed.
Vinyl
Clean with a mild soap solution and remove scuff marks with a pencil eraser.
Carpet
Vacuum regularly to stop surface soil and dirt becoming embedded in the carpet fibres. Blot stains with water and give carpets a professional clean every two to three years.
