Planning your own lighting design
It’s easy to create a lighting scheme that’s perfectly tailored for your family’s needs, just follow these simple steps:
Step 1: Measure your space
Using a tape measure, calculate the dimensions of your chosen room, including the measurements of any immovable objects such as chimneys and windows and the size and placement of your furniture.
Step 2: Draw a plan of your room
On a piece of paper, draw a basic floor plan of your room, using your measurement to make sure everything is to scale. Make sure you include the immovable and movable objects.
Remember to mark down where your light switches and plug sockets are. Although these can be moved, this would be messy and expensive. You could always vary the brightness of your lighting by using dimmer switches.
Step 3: Think about the type of lighting you need
Think about what you do in each part of your room and decide whether you need it to have ambient lighting (overall illumination) or task lighting (direct lighting used for reading), or even both.
Also consider anything you might want to illuminate such as wall art or architectural focal points, you can draw attention to these using accent lighting (visual interest) or spot lighting.
Decide who uses the space the most and what their lighting needs will be. For example, a child will have very different requirements to adults having a dinner party.
Step 4: Mark where your lights will go
Using circles to represent where you would like your lighting to shine, mark out the position of your lights on your plan. Try to avoid overlapping lights or leaving any areas without any lighting. This can help you see what type of fixtures you need (e.g. wall, ceiling, lamp etc.).
Step 5: Choose your lights
Pick the lights that not only will meet your lighting requirements, but will also fit in with your existing or planned design scheme.
To make a design statement in a room mix and match contrasting bold designs of pendant and lampshades.
Vertical floor lamps work well in corners to create a warm cosy feel.
An oversized pendant will instantly make a contemporary statement in your room.
Wall lighting is great for creating subtle lighting effects and also enhancing key features in your room.
