How to create a border design in a child’s bedroom

Paint a fun road mural to weave around a child’s bedroom walls then stencil on their favourite characters for a personalised look.

Step 1: Mark road design

Mark out the road design around the room in pencil. Use a spirit level to keep the lines nice and straight.

Step 2: Mask road lines

Stick tape along the pencil lines to mark out the course of your road.

Top tip

Create a curved corner by drawing around a stenciled shape.

Step 3: Mask markings

Using shorter, equal lengths of tape, mask the markings in the middle of the road at regular intervals.

Step 4: Paint road

Paint at least 2 coats for an even finish. When the paint is completely dry, gently, peel off the tape.

Top tip

Paint inwards from the tape to prevent the paint bleeding underneath it.

Step 5: Create character stencils

Trace your choice of characters onto acetate sheets then cut out the design to create a stencil.

Step 6: Paint characters

Attach the stencil to the wall using masking tape or spray mount, then using only a little paint at a time, dab on the design with a sponge.

Top tip

Dab paint from the front, not the side, to prevent any bleed under the stencil.

Step 7: Paint details

Tidy up the design at the end and add any extra detail with a small paint brush.
