How to create a chalkboard wall

Menu

Was this guide useful?

Using little more than blackboard paint and masking tape you can create a fun and practical chalkboard in any room.

Step 1: Draw design

Think about what design you would like your blackboard wall to take and draw it out onto some paper.

Step 2: Transfer design

Transfer your design onto the wall using a pencil and check you’re happy with how it looks.

Step 3: Mark out panel

Mark out the basic size and shape of your blackboard panel. You can use a spirit level to check that your lines are straight.

Step 4: Apply paint

Mask off any areas that you don’t want to get paint onto using masking tape. Apply two coats of paint for an even finish.

Top tips

Mask outside the pencil lines so you cover them when you paint and paint away from the tape to stop the paint from bleeding underneath it.

Step 5: Remove tape

When your design is dry, remove the tape really carefully to make sure you don’t peel off any of the existing paint.
