Plywood

Plywood is created by gluing thin layers, or veneers, of wood together to form one solid sheet. Each layer is positioned with the wood grain running at a right angle to the one before, this provides great strength and stability. You’ll often see plywood referred to as 3-ply or 5-ply and this refers to the number of layers the sheet is constructed from.

If you are looking to gain a specific finish for your project, veneered plywood is ideal as it comes in a number of finishes including oak and ash.

What plywood is used for

Plywood is generally used for projects that require high-quality, high-strength sheet material. It is often used for doors, stairs, flooring, kitchen units, some furniture and exterior projects. Plywood is ideal if you have a project that requires curved edges as thinner sheets of plywood are bendable. The bendy type of plywood is normally made from three plies.

Lower grades of plywood are used in the construction of houses and the higher grades, which are prettier and smoother, are used for cabinets.

Benefits of using plywood

Plywood is a durable material. It offers an excellent foundation for building and it can be used in a number of projects. It’s an engineered product and the way it’s made makes it resistant to cracking, breaking, shrinking, twisting and warping. It is also cost effective and physically light yet very strong. Plywood won’t soak up water and liquids as easily as MDF and so it is less susceptible to water damage.

Because plywood carries a grain, you can stain it, and this makes it perfect for creating kitchen cabinets and table tops. It holds screws very tightly since the varying grains of wood on each layer give the screws something to hold onto.
