ideas

to transform your bedroom this autumn

The bedroom is the perfect place to retreat to as the weather gets colder and the nights get darker, so doing anything, from installing brighter lighting for dark mornings to adding knitted throws, will be time and money well spent. Read Julia’s tips to make your bedroom feel cosy and inviting during the months ahead.

1. Add colour for comfort

To create an intimate and warm environment, colours used in the bedroom don’t necessarily need to be from the warmer end of the spectrum. Adding a few warm tones such as nude, blush pink or salmon to a calm, grey scheme are enough to create a cosy but contemporary space. However, darker colour palettes can produce a rich, comforting space, so have confidence to try navy or deep teal, two strong trend colours this year. Then mix them with warm metallics, especially copper, for a stunning space.

2. Think about your windows

Blocking out the dark nights and maintaining privacy becomes increasingly important as the days shorten. As texture absorbs light, replacing curtains with shutters or wooden slatted blinds is a perfect way to control privacy and light levels. Dress curtains to the sides of windows to let more light in. If privacy is an issue, using a frosted glass spray at least halfway up the glass is a contemporary and more attractive alternative to net curtains. You can even add pattern using stencils for a bespoke ‘acid-etched’ look.

3. De-clutter your bedroom

Storage can be a problem in a bedroom. Where possible, look for alternative places to store clothing and clutter, such as transforming an under-used spare bedroom or obsolete airing cupboard into a walk-in wardrobe. Look for unusual bedside storage ideas for instant character such as piles of vintage suitcases, industrial stools or by simply adding vintage hairpin legs to an open shelf. Large-lidded wicker baskets are perfect for storing spare linens and towels.

4. Add a touch of texture

In the autumn and winter a mixture of tactile textures can create an indulgent and sensory feel in your bedroom. Combine chunky cable knit throws with good quality, high thread-count bedding and tactile velvet cushions, and you might never want to leave your bed. Natural sheepskin and animal hides are beautiful draped on chairs or as super-soft rugs. If you don’t have the time for a full seasonal update, just changing your throws and cushions will make a huge difference to how you feel in your bedroom.

5. Find a flooring you’ll love

Lots of people love carpet in a bedroom but solid flooring can help to dramatically increase the overall feeling of space and light in a room. Dark timber floors look fabulous with shaggy rugs for warmth and texture, whereas light painted floorboards provide a stunning contrast to deeper colour walls, and can be stencilled to add pattern. If carpet is still your choice for the bedroom, consider the new silk-look carpets for ultimate luxe-appeal.

6. Create a focal point

One of the problems with decorating a bedroom can be the lack of a focal point or feature to add interest to the room, other than the bed itself. If you have the space you can add an architectural feature, such as a fireplace which also gives you somewhere to display candles, plants and ornaments. A large-scale, full-wall mural makes a spectacular feature adding colour and a sense of perspective and can increase the overall feeling of space. A brightly patterned chair can also bring new life to a corner of the bedroom.

7. Brighten your bedroom with mirrors

When levels of natural light are lower in the winter a mirror can bounce light around a room and create an uplifted energy, much needed in autumn. A floor-standing mirror is not only practical for dressing but the extra size adds drama to a space and has the effect of making a room feel bigger. For an on-trend vintage style, a collection of small mirrors grouped together will add a sparkling touch of glamour.

8. Add some autumn accessories

Bringing organic elements in from the outside is a lovely way to embrace the new season. Choose accessories and textures that mimic the autumn colours and mood, by collecting together twigs, leaves and earthy elements to complete the look. Classic art has been a strong trend this year and the rich berry, gold and inky colours they inspire are perfect for autumnal interiors. Introduce matt-black framed oil paintings, dark wood accessories and deep jewel shades to achieve a boudoir feel.

9. Mix in some metallics

For extra warmth and glamour, layer in metallics in lighting, picture frames, votives and lanterns. Wherever you use metallics, the energy will be lifted and a warm light created in the surrounding space. Copper, gold and rose gold are perfect choices for the winter months. Contrast them with matt finishes and cool colours for a contemporary look.

10. Maximise your mood lighting

In the bedroom, lighting needs to be for bright for getting ready for in the mornings and soft and moody to help you relax into in the evenings.  Dimmer switches are ideal to create flexibility but work better with warm white bulbs than bright white ones. If space is restricted, replacing bedside lamps with drop-pendant lights over a bedside table will increase your surface space and add a unique touch. A chandelier or a string of twinkling fairy lights will bring instant sparkle and a touch of ambience to your room this autumn.
