to renovate your bathroom this autumn

A long soak in a hot, foamy bath is the perfect antidote to a day spent out in the cold. Frosty mornings and dark evenings make retreating to the sanctuary of a tranquil and soothing bathroom all the more appealing. Here’s how Julia suggests you pile on the comfort in your bathroom this autumn for the ultimate, indulgent experience.

1. Add some warm autumn colours

Warm seasonal shades like orange are the fastest way to change a bathroom and updating even one wall with vibrant tiles will make a huge difference to the feel of your space. Cooler colours do look fresh and modern, but during the colder months will benefit from the addition of organic elements such as a warm-tone timber flooring or natural accessories, wooden sculptures and frames. For an injection of much-needed energy, choose new towels and accessories in strong, zingy pops of colour for instant ‘happy’.

2. Create an impressive feature wall

Your bathroom can be a great place to try out more unconventional designs as it’s a room that’s mostly used by your family. Having something like a mural, to gaze at while you’re in the bath can be very therapeutic. Mosaics can also look stunning and can be laid in vertical feature panels which look contemporary and can visually heighten the room. Believe it or not, wallpaper is a great choice for a bathroom to add colour and pattern, and strong designs will give the room a new dimension and energy. After all, a space that uplifts your mood will be very welcome on dark mornings.

3. Make more of your bathroom floor

Remember your bathroom floor can also be an integral part of your overall design. Geometric patterns, mosaics, parquet and chequerboard designs can all add interest, but try to choose matt or textured tiles for a safer finish. Continuing the design of floor tiles up the walls will make a strong statement and is a technique used regularly by bathroom designers. Timber flooring can look stunning in a bathroom but for practicality and ease of cleaning, vinyl alternatives can be a great choice. Electric underfloor-heating is definitely worth considering if upgrading the floor and during the colder months your feet will thank you.

4. Let in more natural light

Maximising light levels as the days shorten is easily achieved by changing window dressing for gauzy, translucent blinds that allow plenty of light in. Light wood slatted blinds are another alternative for providing an airy feel and much-needed privacy. Shutters do a similar job, but can be opened fully if needed and bring a touch of luxury to the room. For a bespoke look, make a fretwork shutter which will cast beautiful patterns as sunlight enters the room.

5. Include some quirky touches

There’s no reason that a bathroom should be dull. A quirky design idea can create a fun, uplifting room that will become somewhere the family enjoy spending time. Funky patchwork tiles or typography details, a full-wall mural design or photographic window blind will add character and can reflect your style and personality. Repurposing household objects in an unexpected way, such as using a vintage teapot as a toothbrush holder, can be enough to bring a little joy to winter mornings.

6. Try some more interesting storage

Bathroom storage doesn’t have to be boring. In a well-ventilated bathroom, you can include freestanding or repurposed pieces of furniture to bring a unique and design-led look to the room. Painted vintage cabinets can add a splash of colour and high-end appeal, just use frosting spray on any plain glass if you want to hide the things inside. If you have a standard bathroom cabinet, you can paint it to suit your colour scheme and change the knobs and handles for a more personalised look. Open shelving can be a useful addition, just use wire baskets and wooden crates with them if you don’t want everything on display.

7. Use light to lift your spirits

With daylight at an annual low, good lighting in a bathroom is vital. Overhead lighting is not particularly flattering so wall-lights at eye-level either side of the mirror are a worthwhile update to help you feel your best in the morning. Strip-lights fitted behind a mirror throw a beautiful glow around the edges and dimmable fittings offer a flexible mood setting for evening relaxation. With taller ceilings, a striking pendant light or chandelier can feel really luxurious. For a subtler look that increases the feeling of space, try installing strip lighting to the underside of wall-mounted cabinets to radiate soft light over the floor and give the appearance the cabinets are ‘floating’.

8. Turn your bathroom into a gallery

Many stylish bathrooms have one thing in common - framed artwork on display. A wall of art can be a perfect way to express your character and style in an otherwise functional space. Choose art that is meaningful to you and your family, this could be reminiscent of happy travels, album covers of your favourite bands or pictures created by the children when they were small. Before fitting, group the pictures together to see whether they produce the effect you’re looking for.

9. Light some soothing candles

Although we rarely have time to spend hours soaking in the bath, if you do get an opportunity, then surrounding yourself with candles will keep the winter blues at bay. If you don’t have many suitable surfaces to place candles on, a hanging tealight chandelier or wall-mounted sconce can look magical. Choose scented candles for a multi-sensory experience.
