Your guide to buying dehumidifiers

Dehumidifiers help to keep the home healthy and protect against damaging moisture.

Dehumidifiers are useful for use in rooms like the bathroom and kitchen. Homebase has a great choice of dehumidifiers available, and this useful guide will help you to determine which one is right for your home.

What different types of dehumidifiers are there?

Refrigerant dehumidifiers

Refrigerant dehumidifiers operate in a similar way to your fridge. These units feature a fan to draw in air, and a metal cooling plate inside the unit. Moist air is drawn into the unit, and as this air hits the metal plate, the air is cooled. Moisture inside the air condenses on the metal plate, and this water drips down into a tank. The dry air is then re-circulated into the room, and the process continues until the humidity levels in the room have been reduced to the desired level. The dehumidifier then automatically switches off. Refrigerant dehumidifiers tend to work best at room temperature.

Desiccant dehumidifiers

Desiccant dehumidifiers utilise a desiccant material to absorb water from the air. During operation, moist air is drawn into the unit, past the desiccant material, which absorbs the water. A warm stream of air is then used to reactivate the desiccant and release the moisture, which is collected in a tank. Generally, desiccant humidifiers are lighter and smaller than refrigerant models.

Homebase has a great collection of dehumidifiers.

What should I consider when choosing a dehumidifier?

Capacity and features

Look for tank size, extraction rate, a humidistat and energy-efficiency ratings.

Brand

Some brands are considered more reliable than others. Read online reviews to see which brands come highly recommended by other users.

Quiet operation

Some dehumidifiers are louder than others. If noise levels concern you or if the unit is to be used in a bedroom, look for a model that offers quiet operation.

At Homebase we have an excellent choice of dehumidifiers.

What size should I buy?

Dehumidifiers come in a range of different sizes. The size you need to choose will depend on the size of the room you want to dehumidify, and the bigger the room, the larger the dehumidifier you will need. Pay attention to the size of the tank and check the manufacturer instructions regarding capacity before you buy.

What are energy efficiency ratings?

Dehumidifiers are rated from A to G according to their energy efficiency. A rated units are the most energy efficient models available, and will use significantly less electricity than G rated models. Choosing a more energy efficient model will help to keep running costs down.

Are there any safety tips I should be aware of?

Dehumidifiers can be a fire risk. To minimise the risk of fire, clean your dehumidifier regularly, and never leave it running when you are not at home. For safe operation, a dehumidifier should be located at least 30cm away from the wall when in use.

Are there any purchasing tips I should be aware of?

It is a good move to choose a unit with a large enough capacity to handle all the rooms you want to dehumidify – this will help to ensure that it operates safely, efficiently and effectively.
