Rated 1 out of 5 by Very Limited Protection In 2010 I fitted a new front door, a Diamond Glazed Oak external door. Wanting to protect this door and maintain the oak appearance, I used Sadolin Classic Wood protection and Sadolin Extra Durable Clear Coat under cover before the door was fitted, both sides. This was fine. Every subsequent summer (2011 and 2012) I gave the door a further 2+ coats of Sadolin Extra Durable Clear Coat, both inside and out. However, in January 2012, after quite a wet winter, I noticed that the door panels had blistered badly. (The majority of wooden doors for sale in the UK are of veneered construction) The cause of the damage was water ingress. The door was expensive and I certainly looked after it very carefully following all the instructions on Sadolin tins. I contacted Sadolin (Crown Paints of Darwen, Lancs) who asked for photos of the damage to be sent to them. Without bothering to come and look at the door, their first reply suggested that I had not followed the manufacturers recommendations in treating the door This was rubbish since the door was expensive and I was very careful to protect the door properly.. They then moved on to blame the design of the door in that water had "not been able to flow away" at the base of the door panels. Bearing in mind that this type of door construction is used on thousands of doors, it was quite a stupid remark. They then moved on to say that there was a gap creating a water trap where the area had not been properly sealed. This door had had at least 8 coats of Sadolin so why it was not properly sealed beats me. At no time did Crown paints inspect the door or accept any responsibility, they were coming up with their ideas from photographs just to fob me off. Finally however they acknowledge that the Sadolin products are designed to protect timber from the sun and weather conditions for a period of time BUT unfortunately they will not stop moisture ingress on some points of the door design. So be warned, Sadolin Classic Wood protection and Sadolin Extra Durable Clear Coat may not prevent water ingress. In general, my dealings with Crown Paints left a lot to be desired which is surprising since you would think they would have been more helpful instead blaming everything else except their wood protection product. They did offer at one point to send me replacement tins thank you, the damage had already been done. 02 March 2013
